Bombay Sisters

The Legendary Bombay Sisters, Smt. Saroja and Smt. Lalitha were born in Trichur and had their early education in Bombay, passed intermediate from Bhopal and completed graduation from Delhi University. They had their initiation in Carnatic Music first from their elder sister Smt. Sethu Mahadevan and later from Sri HAS Mani (poularly known as Chellamani Bhagavathar). At this period, the sisters participated in many competition and won many prizes. They applied for the Govt. of India Cultural Scholarship for Higher Studies and both sisters got the scholarship one after other, which in turn brought them to Madras for higher studies in Carnatic Music from Central College of Carnatic Music, Adayar, under the direct tutelage of Sangeetha Kalanidhi Late Sri Musri Subhramania Iyer. After passing out of the college with the title Sangeetha Vidwan, they continued their training in Carnatic Music from Sangeetha Kalanidhi Late TK Govinda Rao. The sisters started their concert career from 1963 and have performed in all the Sabhas in India, all music festivals, AIR, Sangeetha Sammelans, Doordarshan etc. to name a few. They have been conferred with various awards including Kalaimani by Govt. of Tamil Nadu and Iyal Isai Nataka Mandram in 1992, Sangeetha Kala Sagaram by His Holiness Sri Sankaracharya Swamigal of Kamakoti Peetam, Kanchipuram in 1996, Sangeeth Nataka Academy awards awarded by President of India, His Excellency Sri Adbul Kalam in 2005, Sangeetha Kala Sikhamani by Indian Fine Arts Society, Chennai in 2006, Isai Perarignar by Tamil Isai Sangam Chennai in 2006, Sangeetha Kalanidhi by Madras Music Academy in 2011. Smt.Saroja and Smt. Lalitha founded a trust, named after their parents - MUKTHAMBARAM TRUST to foster, nourish, and give exposure to young, deserving talents in the field of Classical Carnatic Music.
